Our Sandblast Effect

Sans Soucie - 1D Sandblast Effect

1D $

Design elements are sandblast etched on the top surface of smooth, clear glass, and are solid white shapes. This effect is considered semi-private, as the clear glass background area of the glass, will vary by design.

Sans Soucie - 3D Sandblast Effect

3D $$

Just like 3D Enhanced, the design is cut deep into the glass, which creates that beautiful, sculpted, free floating effect, but is a flat, embossed look, withOUT any gradients, or shading, that require the much higher-level of skill and-time to create.

Sans Soucie - 2D Sandblast Effect

2D $$

Design elements are Sandblast Etched on the top surface of the glass, and features “shading” where the sandblast density gently fades out to clear glass, a gradient type of look that creates a 2 dimensional effect, but is not carved deep into the glass like 3D. This effect is considered semi-private, as the clear glass background areas of the glass, will vary by design.

Sans Soucie - 3D Enhanced Sandblast Effect

3D Enhanced $$$

This sandblast effect requires the highest level of skill and time to create. The design is sandblasted in STAGES, one small segment at a time. The artist sculpts and cuts, deep into the glass, at varying depths, creating a relief texture in the glass. The carved edges of the various elements in the design, will pick up surrounding light, illuminate, and become a 3 dimensional object free-floating in the glass. The artist also implements “shading”, where the sandblast density gently fades out to clear glass, a “gradient-like” effect that adds more intricacy and detail, to the finished look.

Our Painted Glass Effect

Sans Soucie - 3D Painted Sandblast Effect

3D Painted $$$

Design elements are sandblast-sculpted, cut deep into the glass, creating a flat embossed look. The carved elements are airbrush painted with a permanent translucent glass dye. This effect is considered semi-private, as the clear open areas of the glass, will vary by design.

Sans Soucie - 3D Enhanced Painted Sandblast Effect

3D Enhanced Painted $$$$

The carved elements are then airbrush hand-painted with a permanent translucent glass dye. Dark and light gradients are added to highlight details and enhance the look. The carved and painted edges of the various elements in the design, will pick up surrounding light, illuminate, and become a 3 dimensional object free-floating in the glass.

Our Backgrounds for Privacy

(a.k.a. “Glass Finishes”)

Sans Soucie - Frosted Glass Finish

Frosted

Private

Private glass means just that: The glass - will be private. The background will be completely frosted, leaving no clear areas, creating 100% obscurity in the glass. Objects are only visible when pressed right up against the glass. Once a few inches away, objects can’t be seen at all, making it the perfect solution where you need privacy, without blocking light.

Sans Soucie - Gluechip Glass Finish

Gluechip

Semi-private

Gluechip is a beautiful, sparkling, fern-like texture that creates random patterns in the glass. A natural occurring process, glue-chipping involves applying a thin layer of a special glue to a sandblast etched surface. As the glue dries, over many hours, it shrinks, cracks and peels up into small, random shapes and pieces, and as it does, it takes a thin layer of glass with it, leaving behind a unique - textured, pattern. The gluechip pattern not only creates obscurity, but adds another element of beauty and lustre to the glass. Objects behind, become blurred, when 10-12” away from the glass. Design elements and the gluechip background, are separated by an 1/8” clear pinstripe. Objects can be seen when held right up against the glass, and if you approach the glass and peer through, you can see through the 1/8” clear pinstripes. For this reason, this glass is considered semi private.

Sans Soucie - Clear Glass Finish

Clear

Semi-private / Not Private

A clear glass background will always be considered semi-private at best, and in some cases, not private at all. That’s because no matter how much each design covers the glass, there will always be SOME clear areas that can be seen through. The amount of frosted coverage vs. clear glass areas, will vary by design.

How do I CLEAN my Sans Soucie Art Glass?

Download the Cleaning & Maintenance Sans Soucie Art Glass 2019

Can I get a brand NEW, CUSTOM design?

Yes, you can!  In fact, the vast majority of our designs were all born out of a collaboration between our clients imagination, and our principal owner and artist, Chauncey Gannett.  A concept of what’s envisioned is conveyed thru written descriptions and visual references like photos or other art, and from that, a scale drawing is created for approval.   The scale drawing is created upon receipt of a 50% deposit to place the order, or an art retainer fee.  The art retainer fee is 10% of the total price of the product, or a minimum of $350, whichever is greater.

How do I get a Quote for products I can’t buy online?

How long will it take to receive my order?

Between 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the COMBINATION of which GLASS EFFECT you choose, and in the case of slab and prehung doors, WHICH DOOR MATERIAL you choose and what SIZE. Our fastest sandblast effects are 1D and 3D solid. Our Stained glass, 3D Enhanced and Painted Glass have the longest lead times because of the much higher amount of time it takes to create those effects. When you select a product, you’ll see ETA listed in the Product Description.

What does “Sans Soucie” mean and how did you get that name?

“Sans Souci” is French and literally means “without concern”, meaning “without care” or “care free.”   “Soucie” is the last name of the owner’s Stepfather and Mother, who originally started the business back in the 70’s.

How do I find a qualified glass installer on my end?

Here are a few suggestions:

(1) Visit the BBB website has a list of qualified glazing contractors both accredited and non-accredited.

(2)  Contact a Contractor or Architect and they will be able to refer you to a glass company they use.

(3)  Google “Glazing Contractors”, your city, your state. You will see your local glass companies with ratings.

(4)  Ask anyone you might know if they have a recommendation for a good Glass shop.

(5)  If you live in a development try asking your HOA.

Is the Glass Tempered?

Yes. With the exception of tables, shelves and mirrors, all glass will be tempered for safety.

Is the Glass Energy Efficient?

Yes!  See the Glass Performance Data Reports for exterior door and window glass at these links:   Dual Pane Units 1/8 over 1/8  (1D and 2D)     Dual Pane Units 3/8 over 1/8  (all 3D)  Single Pane 1/2″ Thick (Fiberglass doors)

What is Tempered Glass?

Tempered glass is heat treated and is about four times stronger than “ordinary,” or annealed, glass. And unlike annealed glass, which can shatter into jagged shards when broken, tempered glass fractures into small, relatively harmless pieces.

What is the difference between low iron glass and regular clear glass?

Clear glass contains a significant amount of iron, which gives it the appearance of a light green tint. Ultra-clear, low-iron glass is super heated to eliminate the iron from the glass, which gives the glass a crystal clear quality.

Frosted Glass Types, Differences and Benefits

Frosted glass is an opaque and visually appealing finish achieved through a variety of different abrasive processes.  Objects are only visible when in direct contact with the glass, making it an ideal choice for privacy without blocking light!  When it comes incorporating frosted glass in your home, it’s important to know the different types available and the advantages and benefits of each one, particularly the amount of durability you need for certain applications and glass products you have in your home.

Frosted Glass Types

There are 5 Main Types of Frosted Glass which include: Acid Etched Glass, Ceramic Frit Silkscreened Glass, Translucent Interlayer Laminated Glass, Applied Translucent Film, and Sandblast Frosted Glass.  See the list below for details, but here at Sans Soucie our Artisans use the art of Sandblast etching and carving to create our beautiful frosted glass designs.

Our Medium for Frosted Glass:  Sandblast Etching and Carving

Sandblasted Glass is a type of etching that creates a frosted, matte finish on the surface.  Sandblasted glass is the only type of glass etching that can achieve artistic dimensional, gradient shading, and sculpture carving, making it the top choice for decorative frosted glass. T his is achieved through a high-pressure stream of abrasive sand that etches the glass surface, creating a 100% permanent, rough texture that won’t fade or wear over time. Sandblasted glass is not only durable, but also easy to maintain and clean with acetone or alcohol in case of oil spots or blemishes.  With its highly durable finish and the ability to create intricate and beautiful designs, sandblasted glass is unmatched by other etching methods. The benefits of sandblast frosted glass far outweigh those of other methods, making it the go-to option for creating detailed, intricate art in glass.

Benefits and Uses of Frosted Glass

Frosted Glass not only adds an attractive and unique element to your interior design, but also provides additional benefits beyond aesthetics. Frosted Glass is hassle-free in cleaning, it can improve the energy efficiency of your home, and also provide both enhanced privacy and security. And the benefits don’t just stop there! Instead of renovating an entire space (which can be extremely costly), you can upgrade your home by simply incorporating Frosted Glass. Whether it’s a front door for curb appeal, a stunning window to open up a room, or an entire shower enclosure for visual appeal, Frosted Glass can help you increase your property value!

Cleaning Frosted Glass

Simply use a gentle touch and a high-quality glass cleaner (like “Windex”) to wipe away any dirt or smudges. We recommend using a soft microfiber towel or a non-abrasive paper towel to avoid leaving any lint behind. However, it’s important to avoid using any abrasive cleaners (like “Comet”) or harsh chemicals (like “Lime Away”) on your Sans Soucie Art Glass, as these can damage the glass’s delicate finish. With a little bit of care and attention, your Sans Soucie Art Glass will stay looking beautiful for years to come.

The sandblasted surface of our glass is durable and permanent, and cannot be rubbed off. Acid-etched glass requires more care when cleaning as it is not as durable. Avoid harsh scrubbing and use gentle pressure to keep your acid-etched glass looking its best.

The main maintenance issue with sandblasted glass is occasional darkened areas caused by oil from fingerprints. These spots can be removed by cleaning with regular glass cleaner or pure clear acetone/lacquer thinner if they persist.

Does Frosted Glass Scratch Easily?

No.  With that said, however, the susceptibility to scratches in frosted glass does vary by the different types.   Some are more easily scratched than others, and each one has a different level of durability, cost and decorative options.  Not all are created equal!
