One of the perfect items in a home or hospitality decor where a beautiful etched, carved and painted custom design is applied to, are MIRRORS.  In addition to a bathroom or vanity, custom mirror is also fantastic for residential entries or foyers, for creating a spacious and open feel, through which a custom art piece can be made.

Limitless textures and patterns can be etched & carved as a mirror frame.  The design can be applied on either the front or back surface, depending of course on the design elements as well as the desired effect.  Etching on the front will create a double image, which in some cases is undesirable, in other cases, perfect!

We often create glass wall art pieces using  mirror.  Landscape scenes etched or carved on the front surface of the mirror are stunning works of art.   Mirror comes in a variety of colors, but they aren’t “limitless”.   There’s bronze, grey, black, peach, green and blue .. but they don’t create limitless “shades” of each color.  There’s just a standard basic selection.  The good news is that we can apply any custom color to the surface to create the desired effect, complimenting the surrounding decor.

At Sans Soucie, we never get bored because we are continually creating new designs and textures to perfectly suit each individual project and piece for our clientele.  After over 30 years, we DO of course have a vast array of design archives, but custom designs are still created and always will be!

Art deco glass typically featuring geometric shapes and formations are very popular and over the years we’ve created some really unique pieces in this modern design style.  Custom designed borders are indeed the most popular choice, however a beautiful custom element added to the center of the table is a fantastic addition to a glass dining table top, since of course when dining, the edges of the table are covered with plates, utensils and glasses!

Table tops are typically a thicker, heavy glass which is what’s needed in order for us to deep carve the design in to the glass (as opposed to just etching the glass surface which is all that’s permissible on a thin glass surface), so in most cases, the design is carved into the glass, creating what many people would refer to as a cut glass table.  When the design is cut or carved in the glass, it creates a sculpted effect where the design actually looks like its “free floating” in the glass.

Carved painted glass table tops and glass table bases takes the design to a whole-nother level!  Adding color to the carved texture in the glass is truly stunning and brings out even more detail and richness in the design.  Colors are custom mixed to pull and compliment the colors of your home or office decor.

Take a look at the “Moonscape Bar Counter & Shelves”.  These glass corner shelves are etched and carved on the underside of the glass, in our “Moonscape” texture, ustom designed to coordinate with the bar top, that is also carved with the Moonscape texture, and features colored glass as well.

Even  the simple, “Small Chiseled Shelves” are a beautiful as well as functional addition to this bathroom!  These small glass shelves have a chiseled irregular edge, and are floating above the commode.  They are just the right size,to hold a few decorative items,  off-set from one another for a nice, balanced look.

Another great example of what can be done in glass, where custom size shelving is needed, are these “Iceberg Edge Shelves” that are installed inside two side niches of an entertainment center.  On these glass shelves, the custom edge is sandblast actually etched and carved on the top surface, for a different effect.  Again, they’re custom fit for inside the niches, floating on top of stainless steel round peg supports and coordinate beautifully with the beautiful art glass pieces and vases set on each.  The custom lighting inside the niches is crucial, highlighting and setting if all off perfectly.

Glass Doors For Oakland Raiders’ Al Davis

Glass Doors for Al Davis, Raiders Football Team Owner

Glass Doors for Al Davis, Raiders Football Team Owner

Glass Doors, also called all glass or frameless doors undoubtedly create a very “high-end” or upscale look to any entry, whether it be for a home or place of business, and with the unlimited glass designs we create at Sans Soucie Art Glass, we believe that a number of the all glass doors we’ve been commissioned to create over the years have been some our most exquisite work.

Etched glass, carved glass Raiders logo on Glass Doors

One beautiful entry that comes to mind is  the glass doors and all glass entry we were commissioned to create for the “The Raiders” football team owner, Mr. Al Davis.  Custom designed for his home in the Coachella Valley, each door is a towering 10′ tall x 5′ wide and were etched and carved with a custom design to provide privacy, while at the same time, making a very personal statement!

The design features the Oakland Raiders football team logo front and center, and is bordered with two different etched and sculpture carved custom glass textures made up of wavy lines and a “glass chunks”.    The background areas of the entire glass surface was solid frosted or etched, to obscure the glass and create privacy.  There are two sets of sidelites, the first set butting up against each glass door, with the borders from the doors continuing all around.  The second set of sidelite windows are about 18″ away from the doors on either side and feature a solid etched glass image of the infamous Super Bowl Trophy.

Visit our online Gallery of Glass Doors to view this and many other examples of framelsss, all glass doors.  You can also visit our Custom Glass Logo Gallery to see dozens of custom corporate logos we’ve been commissioned to etch and carve in glass such as the U.S. Presidential Seal, The U.S. Marine Corp Seal, The Cheesecak Factory, all glass doors for Johnson & Johnson, Metropolitan Theatres, The Palm Springs International Airport, The Beer Hunter and The City of Palm Desert.

Stunning Curved Glass Shower Enclosure

October 15th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

shower/abstract geometric waves circles bandsWe recently created and installed one of the most stunning showers we’ve ever done, in a beautiful custom home up in Northern California.

Rather than a typical “square corner”, this beautiful large shower enclosure features a large curved, laminated glass panel, placed directly in the center between the 30″ wide door and 36″ wide side panel.  The panels are all 84″ tall, and are 3-dimensionally sculpture carved in 4 different patterns that run vertically in columns, continung all the way across and around the enclosure.

We ship our custom glass all over the country, which is then typically installed by a local glazing contractor in the area, but in this case, since the destination was within our delivery range, two of our glaziers/installers made the 8 hour drive (you have to drive very slow when hauling art glass!), delivered and installed the glass into a beautiful custom home in Danville, California, about 23 miles East of Oakland.shower/abstract geometric waves circles bands

The geometric, contemporary pattern carved on the glass, was a design by Maria Billingsley.

Visit our Custom Showers Gallery and see dozens of examples of our beautiful, custom shower enclosures!  You can also visit our Geometric Designs Gallery, which features all different types of architectural glass products, all etched and/or carved with geometric designs.

Shower in Illuminated Art: Custom shower enclosures

September 17th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

Over the last 33 years, Sans Soucie has created incredible custom designed etched and carved glass frameless shower doors and shower enclosures inside hundreds of luxury, custom homes.

"Arctic" shower enclosure, features heavy glass overlay pieces, chiseled edges and a stunning random texture. The shower is being illuminated by the window on the opposite wall. Commissioned by Susan Schreiber Interior Designs.

Our etched and carved glass designs on shower glass instantly turn an ordinary, plain glass shower enclosure into an illuminated work of art that you will enjoy not only each time you step into the shower, but every time you enter your bathroom!

"Rugged Retreat" gives the illusion of multi-layers with waves crossing over one another. Note the "matching mirror" inside the shower, the edges are chiseled and waves are etched and 3-dimenssionally sculpture carved.

As with all our products, the design possibilities are limitless and so are the applications.  One design option is to merely “trim”  or “frame” your shower glass.   Adding a beautiful etched and/or carved and painted border, for example, adds a beautiful custom touch.   We can also target certain areas of your shower glass where you may want to create privacy or obscurity, such as the center sections, or lower section, running up into the center, while leaving the top area clear, allows for visibility in to the shower (allowing you to admire your tile work), which at the same will allow you to “see out” from inside the shower, creating a completely open feel as you stand in your shower.

Adding one of our custom edges to the exposed, top edges of the glass is a fantastic application as well.  Sans Soucie creates a large number of custom edge designs, ranging from a simple chiseled edge, to waves and various textures.

"Expanding Bands", a simple design targeting the center sections, for an added touch and a bit of obscurity.

Positive & Negative Sandblast Techniques

August 28th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

At Sans Soucie, we use a variety of different sandblast effects and techniques in our work.  For the most part, the pieces we create are achieved through what’s called “multi-stage sandblasting”, where the design elements are carved, one small part a time, layer upon layer, achieving a multi-dimensional effect in the design.

This grape cluster and leaves are a "multi-stage" sandblast. Each grape has been sandblasted one at a time.

This grape cluster and leaves are a "multi-stage" sandblast. Each grape has been sandblasted one at a time.

A more common technique used in sandblasted glass, is called a “single stage sandblast”.  It’s “one stage”, in that the entire template is cut and all the elements or portions that will be sandblasted are removed at the same time, then the entire surface is sandblasted at the same time.   Within this technique, are two “effects” or finishes:   They’re what’s referred to as  a “postive” or “negative” sandblast.

The positive sandblast is where the elements within the design remain clear glass and the background area of the glass is solid etched.

Obviously the negative sandblast provides for obscurity and so this technique is used for the majority of products like pantry or door glass where privacy is desired.
