With no limit in design possibilities, some very bold and exciting creations come about!  We recently completed a bathroom that features a number of custom glass elements, all featuring coordinated etched, carved and painted designs.  Starting with the Shower Enclosure, this client selected our “Triptic” Design, which was then carried thru to the mirror borders and the vanity.  The glass sinks are a mixture of deep golden reds and copper hues, perfectly suited to compliment the vanity glass.

Art deco glass typically featuring geometric shapes and formations are very popular and over the years we’ve created some really unique pieces in this modern design style.  Custom designed borders are indeed the most popular choice, however a beautiful custom element added to the center of the table is a fantastic addition to a glass dining table top, since of course when dining, the edges of the table are covered with plates, utensils and glasses!

Table tops are typically a thicker, heavy glass which is what’s needed in order for us to deep carve the design in to the glass (as opposed to just etching the glass surface which is all that’s permissible on a thin glass surface), so in most cases, the design is carved into the glass, creating what many people would refer to as a cut glass table.  When the design is cut or carved in the glass, it creates a sculpted effect where the design actually looks like its “free floating” in the glass.

Carved painted glass table tops and glass table bases takes the design to a whole-nother level!  Adding color to the carved texture in the glass is truly stunning and brings out even more detail and richness in the design.  Colors are custom mixed to pull and compliment the colors of your home or office decor.

Custom Glass Signs: Your Name in Lights!

Sans Soucie specializes in custom made, etched and carved glass signs that are engraved through sandblasting the letters and/or + logo on to the glass.  The letters and logo can be either etched on the surface of the glass, OR they can be 3-dimensionally sculpture carved into the glass, or engraved, which creates a look of the lettering and logo literally “floating” in the glass.

The U.S. Presidential Seal, carved in glass by Sans Soucie in 2008, for the Tribute Room aboard the aircraft carrier, "The George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)".

Undoubtedly our most “famous custom glass sign” is the Presidential Seal Glass we carved for the aircraft carrier, The USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), in 2008.  This gorgeous seal is 3-dimensionally sculpture carved on crystal clear, Starphire® glass, and is edge lit for brilliant illumination.  Read the complete story about the project on our web site!

Visit our Custom Glass Signs Gallery and see dozens of examples of glass signs of all different styles and configurations.  In addition to the U.S. Presidential Seal, we’ve done a number of notable logos, such as The US Marine Corp Seal, Princeton University Whig and Clio Seal, The Cheesecake Factory, Metropolitan Theatres, The Beer Hunter and Applebee’s Restaurant.

Color can also be incorporated into the glass sign.  Any custom color can be added to the carved glass surface.  The glass must be carved in order to be able to add color, because the carved surface allows for a surface that the paint can adhere to.  Sometimes solid or metalic colors are added, but most often, a transparent color is selected, so that light can pass thru, creating lettering and logos that are not only 3-dimensional, but now have illuminated color.

Any size, shape or color can be custom designed to show case your logo.   We’re showing a number of examples in this article, from a very basic plaque type of sign, to carved and painted glass logo signs.  The most popular form or custom glass signs made by Sans Soucie, are the type that hang on a wall, mounted with stand-off posts.

Glass Partition etched, frosted glass logo / lettering in clear glass.

The optimum wall color choice, behind the hanging sign, will vary, depending on how the lettering and logo are executed.  If we only etch or carve the lettering or logo (which turns the glass white), then best wall color choice will be a dark surface, so that the lettering and logo will really stand out.  The darker the better, but so long as it’s in the darker hues, any color will do, you just need enough to create a contrast.  If the lettering and logo are to be carved with color applied to the glass, then a lighter wall color will be fine.  Again, there’s just a need for contrast, so you select an opposite wall color, from the colors in the glass.  The City of Palm Desert sign shown in this blog is a great example of when carving and painting the logo and lettering in a darker color, a neutral wall color works just fine.

Of course there are many other types and forms of custom glass signs .. even as simple as etching your logo on to door glass or window glass.  Glass partitions are another familiar form, where a company logo is applied, either exterior or interior, as seen on the PT Industries divider glass.

There’s a huge advantage of sandblasting the glass with lettering and logos, verses just using vinyl sign lettering in that the sandblasted surface will never peel up, chip, fade or disintegrate.  And of course, there’s no comparison between vinyl lettering and the look and feel or 3-dimensionally carved and painted glass that’s illuminated!

Adding color to an etched glass design creates a brilliant effect and adds additional depth and highlights to the design details in the 3 dimensionally carved glass surfaces.

The color is applied through air brushing and any color can of course be used.  Colors are blended over the glass surface to create even more of a 3 dimensional effect.

Painted glass designs are very popular for door glass and window glass, as well as dividers.  IF the glass is in direct sunlight, the colors will likely fade over time, but most entry doors have some degree of shade, so that’s not usually a big issue.

We can personally attest to this, with our front door glass installed back in 1989.  That door glass is still in place today, and shows all the soft highlights of the pastel colors that were applied to the southwest adobe style design.

Of course direct sun not being an issue for indoor architectural glass, like showers and dividers, the color will never fade and is a fantastic addition, bringing in color from other decor items like wallpaper, throw pillows, floor tile, custom colors will

We just finished and delivered this gorgeous Glass Dining Table top that includes a custom glass base to match, delivered and set up inside a home at PGA West in La Quinta, California.

The glass table top is 68″ x 68″ and is 3/4″ thick regular clear glass.  This custom design is an exquisite work of art glass, featuring a Cherry Blossom Tree Branch running across and around the edge of the glass.  The design is 3-dimensionally sculpture carved and features colored glass as well.  A soft green was added to the carved leaves and the cherry blossom flowers were painted with a light pink.  The background area is gluechipped.

For an additional custom element, we carved our “Shoreline” edge around the outside perimeters of both the top and the glass table base.   The Shoreline Edge features 3 to 4 waves, with a chiseled irregular outside edge.etched glass dining table top painted glass cherry blossom tree branch - 4

The design coordinates perfectly with the asian, oriental-feel of the decor in this home that’s being newly renovated and remodeled by contractor “All Shapes & Sizes” of Palm Desert.   Our client is sure to get “rave reviews” for years to come!

View dozens of asian or oriental theme custom glass designs at our online Gallery where you’ll see not only additional Cherry Blossom pieces but also bamboo glass designs and oriental portriatures.  To see more tables like these, visit our online Gallery of custom, decorative etched and carved glass Dining Tables, as well as Living Room & Coffee Tables and custom Glass Counters & Shelves.  We also specialize in custom glass backsplashes.

Color! Color! Painted glass in our etched glass designs

A great custom feature that is added an additional design element to many of our etched and carved glass is COLOR!  From soft hints to deep, bold hues, color adds another beautiful dimension to any carved texture or design.

More often than not, color is added as a “highlight” to only certain portions of the design, as you’ll see on most of the examples I’m including in this blog.   etched glass painted tropical fishFor example, we’ll add color to the fish and some of the plant life in a tropical aquarium design, but not to the background areas.  Very often when we’ve done “Reeds” designs, the design will include a hummingbird, and only the hummingbird has been painted while the reeds were left “white” sandblasted only.   Desert scenes will have some of the foliage and boulders, or even the palm trees painted, but the majority of the design will remain unpainted, like the foreground, mountains and clouds.

etched glass carved painted pear cactusCarved and painted signs are very popular and we can custom match any color for any logo.  We color match to items in the decor like flooring, walls, wallpaper, fabrics, or other decorative art pieces that may be near the glass, etc.  In most cases, the color used will be transparent so the light can pass thru, which creates a beautiful, colorful “glow” in the glass.  We do also apply solid colors, which will block the light from passing thru, but will add a perfect, custom element by pulling an exact color match between, say, flooring and a glass door.carved painted glass window cross with beams crown

There’s one particular piece we did a few years ago, that out of all our work, I believe might be the most “colorFUL” piece we’ve ever done.  It was an interior glass window commissioned for the Inyokern Baptist Church, Inyokern, California.  The window features a cross with “beams” surrounding and extending from it with a crown above the cross.  Color was applied to 100% of the glass surface, and the colors chosen were deep, bright yellow, orange, turquoise, purple and neon pink.   The glass is back-lit with flourescent lighting and  has the appearance of “stained, leaded glass”, but all achieved thru sandblast carving and painting the glass.

Early stained glass, incidentally began by very similarly painting the glass, just as we’ve done on this cross piece.  For a great story about the history of stained glass, read “The History of Stained Glass” on the Stained Glass Assoc. web.

etched glass carved painted shower glass gold chunk textureColor matching is of course very specific, so in most cases we will create color samples for your approval, to be sure that the color is correct.   Color is popular for every type of product we create, from etched carved glass doors, windows, showers, couunters and tables, dividers and mirrors.  For items such as exterior door or window glass, we will caution you that if the glass is exposed to direct sunlight, colors can and likely will fade over a period of time, IF they’re exposed to direct sunlight.  They won’t likely “disappear” but can fade.  etched glass painted hummingbird blue yellowA personal experience we had that really “stood the test of time”, was the front door glass we had for many years.  It was a Southwest landscape design that featured adobe houses, a beautiful clay pot, and colorful clay pot draped on a ladder.   The glass was installed in 1990, and in 2003, the glass was actually moved to a different home (a beautiful, southwest adobe style home, perfect for the southwest design in the glass).  To this day, over 20 years later (!),  the color still remains!   In both homes, however, the front door did not receive direct sunlight.

etched glasss carved painted palm trees in glassAdding color does take our artists more than twice the time to create, (in most cases, it will actually take longer to apply the color than it does to sandblast the design).   All areas of the design have to be “re-masked” after sandblasting.  This takes our artists many, many hours to achieve and so of course adding color the design will increase cost.  But it does make a huge statement and adds a very rich element to the design.

Visit our Carved & Painted Glass Gallery on our web site, to see  many examples of various types of glass products that feature color.
