Contemporary Door Glass: Frosted, Carved & Hand Painted

February 2nd, 2010 by lgannett – Comments (0)

This homeowner was looking for a contemporary glass design for their front entry.  Our client had the fantastic idea of combining two of our most popular designs into one!  Our “Triptic” Design, and our “Water Trails” design were combined to create this gorgeous new geometric, contemporary design aptly named “Triptic Water Trails”.

The background area of the glass is the “Water Trails” .. the glass is frosted, leaving narrow wavy lines running vertically down the glass.

Wide rectangles of varying widths and carved textures were added to the upper portion.  Our Triptic design features the same sort of feel with its odd-shaped, irregular edged rectangles.  The textures vary from smoother to a more deepr “bumpy” texture we call “Moonscape”, to wavy, narrow, vertical grooves.

A truly stunning and eye catching effect is created with our custom glass counter and vanity glass.  Glass can be edge lit, or simply spot lit from beneath and of course adding color to the carved glass design will really make a statement, and pull from the colors of the surrounding decor items, like tile and wallpaper.  Our transparent colors can be matched to your decor.

A Shattered Glass Counter is a beautiful custom option, which can be made to fit any size or configuration bath vanity.  Shattered glass is typically 3 layers of 1/4″ thick glass, resulting in counter top that is 3/4″ thick.  The center layer is tempered glass, that when “drilled” through, shatters and creates that gorgeous, multi-facted “diamond like” appearance that sparkles brilliantly!  A fanastic option we suggest is making that bottom layer, a layer of mirror!  Mirror comes in a multitude of different colors, which again would coordinate to any color scheme.  Using the mirror, adds dimension and multiplies that gorgeous “sparkle effect!”

Freestanding shower partitions are another fantastic custom glass item for your bath.  A plain glass partition in and of itself is pretty, but adding one of our Custom Etched, Carved Glass Edges really finishes off the piece, adding a beautiful, custom look.  Sans Soucie creates a number of custom glass edges that we apply not only to shower dividers, but also to frameless, all glass shower enclosures, custom glass shelving and table edges.

Contemporary Glass Designs by Etched & Carved Sans Soucie

December 4th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (2)

At Sans Soucie Art glass, we’ve been creating contemporary decorative etched glass designs since our beginning!  The look and feel of contemporary design in art and architecture has continued over the years to remain a popular and preferred design style.  In our desert area, I would say it began to make a really major comeback starting about 7-8 years ago.

“Contemporary” is defined as “living or occurring at the same time” and “belonging to or occurring in the present”.  I remember first seeing this design style in furniture and homes as I was growing up in the 70’s.

As degagefurniture.com puts it, “In furniture, modern or contemporary style basically evolved in the 20th century. Extraneous design and decorative accessories began to be phased out: ruffles, tassels, extra drawers, intricate carvings and the like were gone. Instead, designers began to focus on form and function and the new theory that less is more. Lines became cleaner, and designs became simpler. Furniture began to compliment a room rather than overwhelm it, and grew more and more functional to boot. Modern style’s pleasing design and practical advantages propelled the movement forward to the leading design trend that it remains today.”

Custom Glass Signs: Your Name in Lights!

Sans Soucie specializes in custom made, etched and carved glass signs that are engraved through sandblasting the letters and/or + logo on to the glass.  The letters and logo can be either etched on the surface of the glass, OR they can be 3-dimensionally sculpture carved into the glass, or engraved, which creates a look of the lettering and logo literally “floating” in the glass.

The U.S. Presidential Seal, carved in glass by Sans Soucie in 2008, for the Tribute Room aboard the aircraft carrier, "The George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)".

The U.S. Presidential Seal, carved in glass by Sans Soucie in 2008, for the Tribute Room aboard the aircraft carrier, "The George H.W. Bush (CVN 77)".

Undoubtedly our most “famous custom glass sign” is the Presidential Seal Glass we carved for the aircraft carrier, The USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), in 2008.  This gorgeous seal is 3-dimensionally sculpture carved on crystal clear, Starphire® glass, and is edge lit for brilliant illumination.  Read the complete story about the project on our web site!

Visit our Custom Glass Signs Gallery and see dozens of examples of glass signs of all different styles and configurations.  In addition to the U.S. Presidential Seal, we’ve done a number of notable logos, such as The US Marine Corp Seal, Princeton University Whig and Clio Seal, The Cheesecake Factory, Metropolitan Theatres, The Beer Hunter and Applebee’s Restaurant.

Color can also be incorporated into the glass sign.  Any custom color can be added to the carved glass surface.  The glass must be carved in order to be able to add color, because the carved surface allows for a surface that the paint can adhere to.  Sometimes solid or metalic colors are added, but most often, a transparent color is selected, so that light can pass thru, creating lettering and logos that are not only 3-dimensional, but now have illuminated color.

Any size, shape or color can be custom designed to show case your logo.   We’re showing a number of examples in this article, from a very basic plaque type of sign, to carved and painted glass logo signs.  The most popular form or custom glass signs made by Sans Soucie, are the type that hang on a wall, mounted with stand-off posts.

Glass Partition etched, frosted glass logo / lettering in clear glass.

Glass Partition etched, frosted glass logo / lettering in clear glass.

The optimum wall color choice, behind the hanging sign, will vary, depending on how the lettering and logo are executed.  If we only etch or carve the lettering or logo (which turns the glass white), then best wall color choice will be a dark surface, so that the lettering and logo will really stand out.  The darker the better, but so long as it’s in the darker hues, any color will do, you just need enough to create a contrast.  If the lettering and logo are to be carved with color applied to the glass, then a lighter wall color will be fine.  Again, there’s just a need for contrast, so you select an opposite wall color, from the colors in the glass.  The City of Palm Desert sign shown in this blog is a great example of when carving and painting the logo and lettering in a darker color, a neutral wall color works just fine.

Of course there are many other types and forms of custom glass signs .. even as simple as etching your logo on to door glass or window glass.  Glass partitions are another familiar form, where a company logo is applied, either exterior or interior, as seen on the PT Industries divider glass.

There’s a huge advantage of sandblasting the glass with lettering and logos, verses just using vinyl sign lettering in that the sandblasted surface will never peel up, chip, fade or disintegrate.  And of course, there’s no comparison between vinyl lettering and the look and feel or 3-dimensionally carved and painted glass that’s illuminated!

Stunning Curved Glass Shower Enclosure

October 15th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

shower/abstract geometric waves circles bandsWe recently created and installed one of the most stunning showers we’ve ever done, in a beautiful custom home up in Northern California.

Rather than a typical “square corner”, this beautiful large shower enclosure features a large curved, laminated glass panel, placed directly in the center between the 30″ wide door and 36″ wide side panel.  The panels are all 84″ tall, and are 3-dimensionally sculpture carved in 4 different patterns that run vertically in columns, continung all the way across and around the enclosure.

We ship our custom glass all over the country, which is then typically installed by a local glazing contractor in the area, but in this case, since the destination was within our delivery range, two of our glaziers/installers made the 8 hour drive (you have to drive very slow when hauling art glass!), delivered and installed the glass into a beautiful custom home in Danville, California, about 23 miles East of Oakland.shower/abstract geometric waves circles bands

The geometric, contemporary pattern carved on the glass, was a design by Maria Billingsley.

Visit our Custom Showers Gallery and see dozens of examples of our beautiful, custom shower enclosures!  You can also visit our Geometric Designs Gallery, which features all different types of architectural glass products, all etched and/or carved with geometric designs.

A Stunning Combination: Etched and Beveled Glass

September 22nd, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

We recently installed one of the most stunning, most unique entry glass systems we’ve ever designed and created.   Commissioned by the homeowner, the glass was installed inside their private residence inside The Vintage Club of Indian Wells, California.  This gorgeous luxury home is currently undergoing a complete renovation and remodel by De Witte Construction of Palm Desert.

We featured additional art glass windows created for this home in a previous blog .. elegant windows of landscape and floral designs, featuring our highest levels of design quality and complexity levels.stained glass beveled etched tropical leaves1

The glass for the entry is unique in that it features both a tropical etched glass design that was applied to leaded beveled glass .. a rare and stunning combination.

The entry system has a total of seven triple pane, insulated glass units installed into metal frames (provided by Crystal Clear Mirror & Glass of Thousand  Palms).  The glass used to create the leaded panels, consists of tall vertical rectangles and squares with beveled edges all around, that run across both the top and bottom sections, combined with panes of clear glass across the remainder of the glass, called “the field” areas.  The center sections of the door glass features a “diamond shape” with various types of beautiful textured glass, adding another level of variation and interest to the design.

The leaded panels were then sandblasted with an etched and shaded Tropical Leaf design, with tall leaves that run up the sides and angle in toward the center, creating an “inviting” feel as you approach the entry.

We are extremely proud to have been selected to create this stunning entry, as well as the additional art glass windows for this incredible home and working with this homeowner, the staff of De Witte Construction and Crystal Clear Mirror & Glass was a pleasure as always!   What a great project.

Shower in Illuminated Art: Custom shower enclosures

September 17th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

Over the last 33 years, Sans Soucie has created incredible custom designed etched and carved glass frameless shower doors and shower enclosures inside hundreds of luxury, custom homes.

"Arctic" shower enclosure, features heavy glass overlay pieces, chiseled edges and a stunning random texture. The shower is being illuminated by the window on the opposite wall. Commissioned by Susan Schreiber Interior Designs.

Our etched and carved glass designs on shower glass instantly turn an ordinary, plain glass shower enclosure into an illuminated work of art that you will enjoy not only each time you step into the shower, but every time you enter your bathroom!

"Rugged Retreat" gives the illusion of multi-layers with waves crossing over one another. Note the "matching mirror" inside the shower, the edges are chiseled and waves are etched and 3-dimenssionally sculpture carved.

As with all our products, the design possibilities are limitless and so are the applications.  One design option is to merely “trim”  or “frame” your shower glass.   Adding a beautiful etched and/or carved and painted border, for example, adds a beautiful custom touch.   We can also target certain areas of your shower glass where you may want to create privacy or obscurity, such as the center sections, or lower section, running up into the center, while leaving the top area clear, allows for visibility in to the shower (allowing you to admire your tile work), which at the same will allow you to “see out” from inside the shower, creating a completely open feel as you stand in your shower.

"Cyclone" shower door with narrow side panel. Center section is 3-dimensionally carved and painted, side waves are carved and shaded.

Adding one of our custom edges to the exposed, top edges of the glass is a fantastic application as well.  Sans Soucie creates a large number of custom edge designs, ranging from a simple chiseled edge, to waves and various textures.

"Expanding Bands", a simple design targeting the center sections, for an added touch and a bit of obscurity.

Stained Glass: Beauty that endures

"Beautiful Bevel Clusters" door glass installed at a private residence at Rancho La Quinta Country Club, La Quinta, California

"Beautiful Bevel Clusters" door glass installed at a private residence at Rancho La Quinta Country Club, La Quinta, California

When Sans Soucie first began in 1976, the original primary medium was stained glass. Creating custom partitions and lamp shades for various establishments such as Rusty Pelican restaurants, stained glass was back then and remains today to be very popular and beautiful choice for many product applications and types of projects.

Windows and door glass are of course the most popular products, but another would be custom cabinet glass.  As with our etched glass designs, any design is possible and of course there are thousands of glass colors and almost limitless textures that can be implemented.

Beveled glass remains one of the most beautiful looks and effects for stained and leaded glass pieces.  Much like diamonds, that beautiful faceted, prism effect will never go out of style and are used inside both traditional or contemporary designs.

When leaded or stained glass panels are used for an exterior application (for a window or door), most often, the decorative panel is sealed in between two layers of glass, a “triple pane” unit, providing ultimate protection from the elements outside as well as easy cleaning and maintenance.

New Entry Door Glass for Historic Home

August 25th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (2)

Looking thru the glass to the mural inside, as you approach the front entry.

Looking thru the glass to the mural inside, as you approach the front entry.

Last week we installed a new entry door glass panel into a home that is not only beautiful, but also has a wonderful, unique history, owned by a delightful couple, Harold & Dorothy Meyerman.

As we talk about on our web site, we count ourselves incredibly fortunate to be in the business we are in, that gives us opportunities to meet and get to know some amazing people, who commission us for glass in their incredible homes!   This client was no exception!  From the moment Harold & Dorothy entered our showroom, we enjoyed working with them, planning and designing their glass.   We also soon discovered that their home was not only beautiful, but had an interesting history.

The home is located in the Oak Knoll area of Pasadena, near the Langham Hotel. The architect was H. Roy Kelly, reasonably well known in his day.  He was a student of Mies van der Rohe.  The 1950’s style home was featured in a 1949 issue of Architectural Digest that Harold &  Dorothy have.  Dana Smith was its first owner and the Meyerman’s purchased the home from him.  Dana chaired President Nixon’s early campaigns including the one which led to the President’s “Checkers” speech.  The Meyerman’s have done significant updates over the years, much with the approval of Mr. Kelly, who last saw the home at the age of 98.

The new door glass is installed into the wide front entry door and measures approx. 36″ x 79″ and is 1/2″ thick, clear tempered glass.

View from inside the house, looking through the glass to courtyard, entry.

View from inside the house, looking through the glass to courtyard, entry.

The design selected is a pattern of 1″ squares, set 1″ apart, that are 3-dimensionally sculpture carved into the inside surface of the glass, providing a very stream-lined, contemporary feel, in keeping with the sleek lines of the 1950’s style architecture.  The background area is clear glass, which allows for visibility through the glass, into the entry area of the home, where directly opposite of the front door, is a beautiful mural commissioned in 1996, which can now be seen through the glass, as you enter the driveway and approach the home, which was not previously visible thru the original, solid door.

We’re proud to have a piece of our work as a part of this beautiful, historic home, and are grateful to have

met and worked with Harold & Dorothy!

We invite you to read their comments about the new glass on our Testimonials Page!
