We recently finished a gorgeous entry door glass panel for a private residence in Idyllwild, featuring a landscape scene with a view of Idyllwild, California’s well known “Tahquitz Peak” mountain.  Set in the design with pine trees and boulders in the foreground and in the distance, the detail brought out in the pine tree needles can hardly be appreciated in these photos!

Decorative Glass Windows, Etched or Frosted for Privacy

December 1st, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (1)

A decorative glass window is the perfection solution for areas in your home where privacy is needed, but so is light!  Take a look at the windows featured in this blog that demonstrate different designs, and even different sandblast  methods, that demonstrate how that can be achieved.

"Lilly Pads & Lotus" Tub Window

"Lilly Pads & Lotus" Tub Window

At Sans Soucie Art Glass Studios, we incorporate a number of different techniques to create the looks and textures that we want.  What’s also wonderful about our custom glass designs, is that any design can be executed a whole host of ways.  For instance, where the highest level or privacy is needed, we’ll implement a solid frosted background, whereas if only partial privacy is needed, we’ll apply a “lightly misted” background, which means that we have just lightly sandblasted the background and some visibility or level of clear glass remains, creating just the right amount of obscurity.

"Iris Perch" Entry Window Glass

"Iris Perch" Entry Window Glass

And then again in some instances, we’ll combine the two!  An example of implementing both a solid frosted or solid etched background along with a lightly misted background, is seen on the beautiful “Lilly Pad & Lotus” Tub Window.  The gorgeous lilly pads and lotus flowers have been 3-dimensionally sculpture carved (solid) into the glass, which of course makes those areas completely solid white.  Since the glass was carved, the edges will pick up light and illuminate brighter than the other carved areas.   They’re floating in “water” that flows throughout the design that is both solid frosted and misted.  There’s enough contrast in the two shades of white frosted glass to see a difference.

The “Iris Perch” entry window demonstrates glass that has been sandblasted too 100% density.  The design elements which include iris flowers, leaves, a flower pot and beautiful bird, have all been sculpture carved and the background is solid frosted.

"Lazio" etched, carved & gluechipped glass window

Another background option where privacy is needed, is a gluechipped texture background.  Gluechip is a beautiful texture that sparkles with all the different chipped glass formations and creates a beautiful contrast.  This is seen on the “Lazio” window. The design is a carved glass wrought iron theme, that has been sculpture carved along with some areas that are misted and the background is gluechipped.  This entry window really sparkles and coordinates perfectly with the various wrought iron gates and pieces that are in the surrounding area of the window.

Living in the beautiful Coachella Valley, which is completely surrounded mountain ranges, desert and mountain scenes are a very popular and beautiful design for tub and entry windows.  They of course “fit” the area and always will, and will never go out of style!  We’re showing two different technique styles in the photos featured.  The narrow window “Mountains Pinstripe” is what we call a “pinstripe” method, but could also be called a negative sandblast.   The design elements in this method are brought out by using clear pinstripes.  The pinstripes are typically no more than approx. 1/8″ wide.  This method requires TWO cut lines when creating the template, so the labor involved is actually more than when we do an “etched and shaded” version, which is what’s shown on the wider tub window, titled “Mountains Shaded” in our Tub Window Gallery of our web site.

Be sure to visit our Tub Windows Gallery, and our Entry & Interior Windows Gallery to see many more examples!

Sans Soucie Art Glass Studios created a beautiful set of etched glass decorative wall art pieces, with a custom design that portrays the history of Palm Desert, California.

Panel 1: Open Desert and the beginning of settlers

Panel 1: Open Desert and the beginning of settlers

Commissioned by JD Thompson Interior Design of San Diego, California, for the Kaiser Permanente, Palm Desert Medical Offices, the story flows across 5 glass panels, continuing from one to the next.  Each panel is 30″ wide x 60″ tall, and is 3/8″ thick glass that is etched and 3-dimensionally sculpture carved on the front surface of the glass.

With the desert’s majestic mountain ranges as the backdrop on each panel, Chauncey W. Gannett of Sans Soucie Art Glass designed a beautiful “landscape” scene that begins by depicting the story from Palm Desert’s farm land beginnings to the beautiful resort destination that it is today.

The first panel begins by showing “open desert” with an ocotillo in the foreground and the first cart of a horse drawn carriage.  The next shows the carriage and team of horses, carting in potable water for the original settlers, the Cahuilla indian farmers.  Leading into the next panel are rows of crops in the ground, representing the “Old MacDonald Ranch“, the original name of the Palm Desert area.

The center panel features rows of crops with gorgeous date palms and an adobe home, all of

which are beautifully sculpture carved into the glass.  As we move into the fourth panel, the landscape changes and we see the 5 stone “Agave” City of Palm Desert monument sign by artist Michael Waiting, that marks the entrance into Palm Desert, with children in a local public park, playing on teeter-totter and hot air balloons, high in the sky, a popular sight-seeing desert cities activity.

In the forefront of the fifth and final panel, surrounded by the sprawling oasis and gorgeous fairways at JW Marriott’s Desert Springs Hotel we see a gondola motoring along a lake, with a carving of hotel’s atrium terrace hotel in the background.  Also in the background, is a rendering of the desert’s first university, the California State University San Bernardino, Palm Desert Campus.

Etched Glass for Hotels, Restaurants & Casinos by Sans Soucie

Decorative etched glass is a very popular and useful architectural feature for hotels, restaurants and casinos.  Over the years Sans Soucie has been commissioned to create a wide variety of custom designs for architectural art glass items such as booth partitions, wall glass, custom mirrors and entry windows.

"Renaissance Waves" etched glass partitions

"Renaissance Waves" etched glass partitions

One of my favorites is an “oceanic theme” partition we did for a restaurant inside the Marriott’s Renaissance Long Beach Hotel.  The glass named “Renaissance Waves” is solid frosted in a “negative sandblast effect”, leaving flowing waves and curl shapes in clear glass.  The glass is 18″ tall and was set on pony walls.  The top edges of the glass were chiseled irregular.

Another favorite is “Spa Casino Palms” wall and partition glass we did for the Spa Resort Casino in downtown Palm Springs.  The glass was etched with beautiful date palms that ran across multiple wall glass panels that ran thru the center of one of the casino’s slot machine areas.  There were also glass partitions that were installed above the slot machine’s, that featured a “tilted clay pot” taken from the casino’s logo.

One of our legendary, local restaurants Morton’s’ Steakhouse in Palm Desert, has edge lit boothetched carved glass booth partition mortons palm desert partitions that are 3-dimensionally sculpture carved with their Logo.  The glow of the glass adds a very classy and elegant  ambiance to their dining area.

A stunning example of creating a custom design that’s for fitting the architecture and decor, as well as the geographical landscape of the area, are the glass partitions we created for a restaurant at The Quarry, a private golf community located in La Quinta, California.  We named the glass “Views In the Quarry“, because that’s exactly what they are.  The etched glass design features the four actual scenic views from that particular location inside the club.  In the foreground of the glass, you’ll see the trees and lakes from the golf course, all the way to the tall, majestic rugged mountains of La Quinta.  The way the glass picks up reflection and light, the lakes actually take on a “realistic water shimmer” at certain times of the day.

There are many examples of booth and partition glass that can be seen inside our Custom Glass Dividers Gallery.  Also visit our Commercial Commissions page for more examples of glass we’ve done for various hotels, restaurants, hospitals and theatres all over the country.

Our goal at Sans Soucie Art Glass is to create the perfect, custom look for the architectural glass for your project!

Glass Panels Separate with Style!

"Swan Song" Glass Panel Interior Partition

"Swan Song" Glass Panel Interior Partition

Glass Panels are a fantastic way to separate an area.  Depending upon type of design applied to the glass, the panels can create privacy where needed, or simply add a beautiful custom look suitable to the decor where an open feel is desired, but privacy may not necessarily be needed.

"Galloping in the Vistas"

"Galloping in the Vistas"

Different types of custom glass panels etched and carved by Sans Soucie would include free standing dividers, enclosed bath and shower partitions, glass handrails, narrow fixed partitions, accent glass and pony wall dividers. All of these are available in any custom size or configuration.

In some areas, the only thing that’s needed is a glass panel separation, to create sound privacy in areas such as an office or conference area.  In those instances, simple etched or frosted bands with corporate logos are often applied to wall and partition glass, bringing in the company brand.  Any size logo can be applied to any height level on the glass.

For other areas where visual privacy is needed, we’ll apply frosting or glass etching over the majority of the glass surface.  Again, any custom look is possible, so there’s no limit to what can be featured.

Another fantastic custom element for glass panels are chiseled irregular edges.  The chiseling can follow the design elements, such as mountain peaks, as seen on the beautiful Mountains Panels installed inside the Companion Animal Clinic of Yucca Valley, California this past year.

Many times the irregular edge will just flow across the top and coordinate nicely with the design, like the Ocean Wave panels we did for the Marriott’s Long Beach Renaissance Hotel in Long Beach, California.

Glass panels with abstract formation designs add a stunning look and are a great alternatives for things like shower and bath dividers.

Etched Glass Windows: Tub Window Designs

October 1st, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

"Ondas" Tub Windows
“Ondas” Tub Windows

Our second most popular type of item is our etched and carved glass windows.  Both exterior and interior windows are very popular because our etched glass designs will provide privacy, while allowing the light to pass thru and enter the room.  A great alternative to shades and blinds, that  create privacy, but block light.

Designs  for tub and shower windows can vary greatly, depending upon the amount of privacy needed, and of course design preference.  A great option that is very often used, is to leave the top area of the glass clear, etching the design up to the height level needed for ample privacy, and then leaving the top clear which then allows you to see outside, creating a wonderful, open feel, as seen on the large, full surround “Onas” tub windows.

“Iris Perch”, solid etched and carved

I’ve included one example in this blog of our “Abstract Hills Smooth” design, shown executed two different ways.  On the one, you’ll notice that the gluechipped areas are “obscured”, but may not be private enough for the area, as was the case for this particular window.  We went back in, and later lightly sandblasted those gluechipped areas, creating more obscurity in those sections, so they would be more private.

On the “Iris Perch” window, you’ll notice that all areas of the glass have been sandblasted, with the design areas carved and the background areas etched or “frosted”, creating 100% privacy.

A very popular design for our custom desert homes in our area, the Coachella Valley, are mountain designs.  Our valley is surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges, (San Jacinto, Santa Rosa, Little San Bernardino and Chocolate Mountians), all of which having very different looks and textures, depending on where you are in the valley.  Mountain ranges are a great design, because it makes natural “sense” within the design, to leave the top area above the peaks of the mountain ranges clear glass.

Etched Glass, Carved Glass. What do you mean?

August 18th, 2009 by lgannett – Comments (0)

The term “etched glass” can have a number of different meanings, pointing to a number of different “etching techniques”.

Most people have a basic picture in their minds when they hear the term “etched glass” .. basically visualizing that the glass surface has been turned white!  It’s  no longer “clear”.  This is true, it’s  just that there are a number of different techniques that can be used to achieve this effect,  AND there’s a number of different effects or “looks” of etched glass, all different, but all falling under the definition “etched glass”.

“Etched glass” is a generic term for the treatment of the glass surface to diffuse transmitted light, reduce glare and give the glass a white, frosted appearance.  A couple detailed definitions include:

“Glass decorated through the process of sandblasting or the use of hydroflouroc acid”. (source picassomio.com).

“A type of glassware whose decorative design has been cut into the surface by the corrosive action of an acid.  An etched-glass surface may be either rough and frosted or satiny smooth and translucent, depending largely on the composition of the glass and the amount of time the glass is exposed to the acid.” (source britannica.com).

The method used by Sans Soucie, is sandblasting, whereby we are etching the surface of the glass by spraying it with compressed air and sand.  It takes a very gifted and well trained hand to be able to achieve a level of quality in the art of sandblasted glass!

But then there’s further meaning for us, as we describe our sandblast techniques and effects.  When we use the term “etched”, we really mean “surface etched”, where we have sandblasted the glass enough to effect the “surface only”.    “Etching” does not go deep into the glass and creates a one-dimensional effect.

A cluster of grapes that has been "etched & shaded". This method provides wonderful "definition" or "depth" of the images within the deign, but they are "two dimensional" only.

A cluster of grapes that has been "etched & shaded". This method provides wonderful "definition" or "depth" of the images within the deign, but they are "two dimensional" only.

When we “go deeper” into the glass, we call that  “carving”  or “sculpture carving” the glass.  Carving means we have sandblasted DEEPER into the glass surface, creating a three-dimensional sculpted image, carving a relief design which is a much more detailed effect, obtaining differing depths within the carved image.  The carved EDGES within the design image will actually appear whiter and brighter, as they pick up and reflect the surrounding light.  The image will appear three dimensional, as if it is floating within the glass.

This grape cluster has been "sculpture carved & shaded." Note how the edges are 3-dimensional and pick up the light

Another,  more basic method or really more common “etched glass is look” is called a “solid etch”.  This is a “single stage sandblast” technique, where there is no “shading” (shading is the term we use for leaving clear areas within the design).   And by the way, this is the ONLY effect that can be achieved through other means of etching, such as acid or laser etching.  This is where the design is a “solid white”, if you will.  The effect is one-dimensional and does not create any “depth” or dimension in the design.

Another technique or effect that Sans Soucie glass features, is adding color to the glass design.  This of course adds a dramatic element  and since any color can be applied, this allows for a limitless, custom feature of our glass.
